Probing Health Benefits From Eating Omega 3s

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

It is well known that Omea-3 has a beneficial effect on Cardiovascular Disease.  New studies are showing that t may also have beneficial effects on reducing triglycerides. Animal studies have suggested that omega-3 consumption can reduce brain levels of the amyloid proteins associated with Alzheimer’s disease and reduce irregular heartbeat.  Omega 3s help stabilize the heart and thus reduce cases of sudden death.  Christopher DeGiorgio, professor of neurology at University of California, Los Angeles, has been testing this theory in epilepsy.

The American Heart Association recommends that people without coronary heart disease eat a variety of fish at least twice a week, and include other foods such as Chia seeds, flaxseed and walnuts in the diet.  It says people with documented heart disease should eat about one gram of omega 3s a day.

Omega 3s are found naturally in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines.  The AHA says that while omega 3s is generally safe, some side effects can include a fishy aftertaste, gastrointestinal disturbances and nausea.  It says that while most omega-3 supplements are “essentially” free of mercury, the toxic metal sometimes found in fish, some poorly made supplements can contain “appreciable amounts.”

These side effects of Omega 3 can be avoided with grain sources of omega 3 from Chia Seeds. More

University of Florida:Chia Seed Used to Increase Omega-3 in Eggs

Fat and fatty acid content –chia4, marine algae, fish, fish oil, and vegetable oil have been added to chicken feeds to increase the omega-3 fatty acid content in the egg yolk

University of Florida - Altering the total fat content in the diet of the hen has little effect on the total fat content of the egg yolk. However, the fatty acid profile (or the ratios of the different types of fatty acids) of egg yolk lipid can easily be changed, simply by changing the type of fat used in the diet.

Consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids has been reported to reduce the risk of atherosclerosis and stroke. Consumption of these fatty acids has also been shown to promote infant growth.

Different feeds, such as flaxseed (linseed), safflower oil, perilla oils3, chia4, marine algae, fish, fish oil, and vegetable oil have been added to chicken feeds to increase the omega-3 fatty acid content in the egg yolk. Omega-3 fatty acid-rich eggs may provide an alternative food source for enhancing consumer intake of these ‘healthy’ fatty acids. Evaluation of the eggs during storage indicates that the shelf life of the enriched eggs was comparable to that of typical eggs.

Many omega-3 fatty acid-enhanced eggs are available in the U.S. market under various brand names such as Gold Circle Farms, EggPlus, and the Country Hen Better Eggs. Omega-3 fatty acid-enriched eggs taste and cook like any other chicken eggs available in the grocery store. However, they typically have a darker yellow yolk.

There are also designer eggs on the market that contain a lowered saturated to unsaturated fatty acid ratio. Canola oil is commonly used to alter the ratio of saturated to unsaturated fatty acids. Tampa Farm Services produces an egg said to contain 25% less saturated fat than regular eggs. (more…)

American Heart Association Report on Omega-3

This maybe the most important article available on the benefits of Omega-3 Fatty acids and health, It points out the many benefits of omega-3 and states that vegetable sources of omega three will work as well as fish sources. It clearly makes the link between the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and the use of omega-3. It makes recommendations on the amount that a person should take daily.

I hope you find this beneficial. You can get an excellent vegetable source of omega-3 from Chia Seed. In fact it has the highest amount of any food source. Chia products are available at www.nuchiafoods.com. The company currently offers a 1 LB pack of Raw Whole Chia Seeds, and has plans to offer many new food products, including a Chia Grain (flour) for all purpose baking, cookie mixes and pancake mix. These products are scheduled for roll out in April of 2008.

Fish and Omega-3 Fatty Acids

AHA RecommendationOmega-3 fatty acids benefit the heart of healthy people, and those at high risk of — or who have — cardiovascular disease.

We recommend eating fish (particularly fatty fish) at least two times a week. Fish is a good source of protein and doesn’t have the high saturated fat that fatty meat products do. Fatty fish like mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon are high in two kinds of omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
